The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 82-79, in a battle of two 8th place teams coming into the game. The Cascades fall into 10th place with a 4-9 record, the top 8 teams earn a post season berth. Calgary holds onto the 8th spot with a record of 5-6. The two teams will play again tomorrow night in Calgary, 8PM MST.
The Cascades came out strong and battled the Dinos all night as the game had a playoff atmosphere with both teams coming into the game tied in the standings. The Cascades led by 2 points, 12-10 after the first quarter,. The second quarter was a tight defensive struggle with UFV holding onto the lead at halftime, by 1 point, 29-28.
While the third quarter was close the Dinos out scored UFV by 5 points to gain the lead after three quarters by 4 points. The fourth quarter was a thriller, while Calgary led throughout the final stanza, UFV never quit and came within 1 point, at 80-79 with less than one minute remaining in the game. Calgary hit two free throws and held UFV off the scoreboard in that last minute to clinch the victory by three points.
James Elliott, a fifth year senior from Perth, Western Australia, led all Cascades with a 23 point performance, 14 total rebounds and 1 steal. Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, CA added 19 points and 5 assists and Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC chipped in with 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Cascades recorded 44 total rebounds for the game.
“We will have to put a better performance on the floor tomorrow night if we want a different result, I was impressed with the play of James (Elliott), who had one of his best games ever as a Cascade,” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock.
