Cascades move to five hundred mark with 67-56 victory over TWU, at Langley Sports Centre.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans, 67-56, to move to five hundred at the holiday break.  The Cascades now sport a 6-6 Canada West regular season record as they sweep their arch rivals from TWU.  The Cascades and Spartans played a spirited first half with the lead changing hands several times.

UFV played well moving the ball around and finishing their shots.  To the credit of TWU they hung in their with the Cascades and trailed by one point after the first quarter.  In the second UFV continued to move ball around well and again hit their baskets, TWU kept up with their Abbotsford rivals and the score was tied at 31 at the intermission.

Fifth year veteran Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC picked up where she left off last night leading all Cascades with 8-halftime points.  Sam Kurath, Abbotsford, BC added 4-points and 4-rebounds.
The third quarter belonged to UFV, as the Cascades would hold TWU to 11-points while pulling ahead by 9-points, 51-42. In the fourth quarter, UFV’s hard work paid off as they shut down TWU and continued to score key points to clinch their five hundred record at the holiday break. The Cascades proved to be too strong for the Spartans, now 1-13.  UFV’s lifetime record against TWU, now stands at 9-4, since the Cascades joined Canada West and the CIS, five years ago.
The Cascades were led by Alexa McCarthy, Chilliwack, BC with 16-points.  Gaukel added 13-points and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC and Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC each chipped in with 9-points.  Gaukel pulled down 8-total rebounds to lead UFV.
“Trinity gave us all we could handle this weekend!  I was very proud of our team they handled themselves well, and came out with the two key victories,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
