The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades were defeated by the Trinity Western University Spartans, 92-73, at the Langley Events Centre. The Cascades Canada West record falls to 4-7, with one game remaining before the holiday break, tomorrow night, against the Spartans, in Langley.
The Spartans led from opening whistle to closing. The Cascades kept it close in the first quarter with a 10-point run to close the quarter and pull within one point at 19-18. In the second quarter, the Spartans, ranked 7th in the CIS top ten poll, out scored UFV by 21-points and the Spartan defence held the Cascades to 9-points. Sheldon Bjorgaard, Abbotsford, BC and Ryan Fahandeg, Kelowna, BC each scored 8-points in the first half for the Cascades.
In the third quarter, TWU built up a 30-point lead and the Cascades kept trying to chip away at the lead, but TWU maintained the large lead throughout the quarter. In the fourth quarter, UFV knocked the lead down to 19-points with 1 minute remaining, but never got any closer.
The Cascades were led by Fahandeg with a team high 21-points and 3-assists. Bjorgaard and James Elliott, Perth, West Australia each added 12-points. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC and Fahandeg each pulled down 5-total rebounds.
“It was not a good night for us, it was one of our worst performances of the year. Against a quality opponent we will have to play much better to be competitive tommorrow night,” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock.
