Battle hard but lose their 5th straight in final quarter.
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team fell to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, 60-49, in Canada West regular season play in Vancouver, BC. The Cascades record falls to 2-5 as they will face the Thunderbirds again on Saturday night, in Vancouver.
The first half of the game was very close as the young Cascades stayed close to the veteran Thunderbirds, down only by 4-points after the first quarter, UFV stayed even with their hosts in the second quarter and trailed by 5-points, 26-21, at the intermission.
Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led the Cascades at the half with 5-points, 4-total rebounds and 1-assist. Seven different Cascades scored at least two points in the half showing the depth of the bench.
In the second half, UFV came out strong and close the UBC lead to 3-points after the third quarter,. In the fourth quarter, the Cascades were out scored by 8-points, 18-10, which put the ganme out of reach late and sent UFV to their fifth straight league loss.
“I am disappointed tonight, we need to learn how to finish a game,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer. Commenting on the final quarter of tonight’s game.
Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led UFV with 12-points and 2-assists. Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC chipped in with 10-points, as three different Cascades each added 6-points in the loss to UBC. Sarah Wierks finished with 8-total rebounds.
