The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, 100-90, in Saskatoon to earn their first Canada West win of the young 2010-11 regular season.
The Cascades withstood an early lead by Saskatchewan which include a 30-point halftime performance by Jamelle Barrett. The Cascades were down by a score of 50-38 at the break.
In the second half, they shut down Barrett, limiting him to 6-second half points, while making up the 12-point deficit early in the final quarter and pulling out a 27-15 final quarter to win by-10-points.
Led by veteran guard Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, CA with a team high 28-points, 5-assists and 5-steals. Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC added 18-points and 3-steals, Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC and James Elliott, Perth, Western Australia each added 13-points in the Cascades victory.
The Cascades pulled down 30 team rebounds as 6 different UFV plauers recorded 4 rebounds each.
“We managed to pull together, and put our best effort of the season on the floor, said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock. “I’m really proud of the entire team showing character to come back, when we were behind to a very good Huskie team. We now will need to try to harness tonights improved team play for the rest of the season.”
