The UFV Cascades fell to 0-3 in Canada West but not before giving the defending CIS National Champion Saskatchewan Husklies a very competitive battle. In the first quarter, the Cascades spotted Saskatchewan the early lead trailing by 8-points after the first quarter. In the second frame, UFV came alive outscoring their hosts by 9-points to go into the intermission up 49-48.
In the second half, Saskatchewan’s defence held UFV to 40-points as they were able to out score the Cascades by 12-points to secure the home victory. UFV was led by Ryan Fahandeg, Kelowna, BC with a team high 26-points. Fahandeg went six-for-nine from the three-point line. Sheldon Bjorgaard, Abbotsford, BC chipped in with 14-points and Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, CA added 13-points. Gray also recorded 9-assists in the game. Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC led the Cascades with 5-total rebounds.
“Sheldon’s (Bjorgaard) presence in the line up, was a great addition. He brought energy and spurred on our entire team to compete harder, ” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock. “It was our inability to even remotely hold our own in the rebounding game, that eventually led to our fall tonight.” The Cascades were out rebounded by Saskatchewan 46 to 23 for the game.
