The University of Alberta Pandas defeated the UFV Cascades women’s soccer team, 2-0, in Edmonton, Alberta to drop the Cascades Canada West regular season record to 4-4-1 for 13-points. The loss drops UFV into a three-way tie for the fourth and final Canada West playoff spot with Calgary and Saskatchewan. The Cascades play Saskatchewan tomorrow in Saskatoon in a key match for a playoff spot.
UFV came out strong and played a very competitive game against the Canada West leaders Alberta, they were able to win their share of the “loose balls” and were very even in scoring chances in the first half. The Cascades held the undefeated Pandas to a scoreless tie at the half.
In the second half, Alberta’s experience helped them score twice, 8 minutes into the second frame and the clincher 15 minutes later to send the home team to its 8th victory of the season.
“We had our chances to score today, we played a very competitive first half but in the end it was Alberta who scored the goals,” said UFV Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.
Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC faced 13 shots and made several key saves in the first half to keep the powerful Panda offense off the score sheet. Biagioni was credited with 8 saves for the match.
UFV had 9 corner kicks in the match, but Alberta’s defense denied UFV any golden opportunities to cash in any of those corner kicks as UFV was shutout for the third time this year.
