The UFV Cascades women’s basketball team played two non-conference exhibition games falling Thursday night to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 55-53 and defeating Capilano University Blues, 67-65, on Friday. Both games were played at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre.
The Cascades exhibition record now stands at 6-4 with opening night exactly two weeks away, when UFV hosts the University of Manitoba Bisons, at 6PM, at the Envision Athletic Centre.
On Thursday night the Pronghorns won a squeaker from the Cascades at the buzzer by 2-points. The game was tied in the fourth quarter with defence taking over as both teams scored a grand total of 14 points in that last frame. The Cascades were led by Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with a team high 14-points and 7-total rebounds.
On Friday night, UFV jumped out to an early lead, 2 points after the first quarter and a 37-28 halftime lead. The majority of the second half belonged to Capilano as they continued to chip away at the UFV lead, trailing by 2-points after three quarters and twice threatening to take the lead late in the game before a couple key last minute UFV baskets put the game away.
Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led the way with 16-points, Sarah Wierks added 11-points and Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC finished with 10-points in the win over the Blues. Wierks also pulled down 11-total boards as UFV out rebounded Capilano 48 to 34 for the game.
“They tested us both nights,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer. “The high level competition showed we have worked to do before the CW regular season opener against Manitoba.”
