The UFV Cascades men’s soccer team defeated the University of Victoria Vikes, 3-0, at Bateman Park, in Abbotsford, BC today. The Cascades improve their CWUAA record to 2-6-0 for 6-points, and end a 6-match regular season losing streak. The Cascades also win the 2010 CWUAA season series with Victoria 5 goals to 3 (as both teams won one match).
The Cascades were in control from start to finish, on Saturday afternoon, playing a strong control game and keeping Victoria from any dangerous scoring opportunities. The majority of the first half was played in Victoria’s end of the field and after several good scoring chances were stopped by the Vikes goalkeeper Elliott Mitrou, Victoria, BC, the Cascades caught a break when Victoria’s Gavin Barrett, Richmond, BC batted the ball away from going into the Vikes net. The referee gave Barrett a red card and awarded UFV a penalty shot. Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC made no mistake going left and scoring the game’s first goal. The Vikes would play a man short the remaining 68 minutes of the match.
UFV would score a second first half goal by Stuart Rowlands, Chilliwack, BC five minutes after Plavsic’s goal and the Cascades would go into the halftime break, leading by two.
In the second half, the Cascades withstood an early attack by Victoria to get back into the match, led by goalkeeper Colton Keam, Langley, BC the Cascades held off any Victoria shots at the UFV net. The Cascades put the game out of reach at the 57th minute when Juan Pablo Mora Perea, Morelia, Mexico scored his team leading 4th goal of the season.
Keam made 8 saves to record his second regular season shutout of the campaign.
