Unbeaten streak runs to 4 games!
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team marched into Vancouver and left with a 4-3 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds. This is the Cascades fourth straight positive result against a CIS national ranked Top Ten team. The Cascades improve their CWUAA regular season record to 4-3-1 for 13-points and are now unbeaten in four straight matches. The Cascades not only move up in the Canada West standings but score 4 times in one match, for the first time in 2010. For a second straight night, UFV has won a CWUAA regular season series from a CIS Top Ten program, winning both matches against UBC in 2010.
After spotting UBC the first goal of the match, seven minutes in, UFV went to work scoring the first of their goals at the 19th minute by Caitlin Blondin, Abbotsford, BC, it was the rookie’s 2nd goal of the CWUAA regular season. The game played in heavy rain and wind went back and forth with both teams having opportunities to score again, but the match remained tied at one, at halftime.
“Giving up the early goal was tough, but we settled down and played to our strengths,” said a very happy UFV Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.
The second half opened with fourth year veteran forward Ellen Kuyer, Surrey, BC scoring the first of her three goals 41 seconds into the half. After UBC would tie the match 15 minutes later, Kuyer was back at it beating UBC’s goalkeeper Leah Peric for a second time and the Cascades were back on top, 3-2. For close to 19 minutes UFV held onto the lead with a strong defense led by Lyndsay Munro, Maple Ridge, BC and goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC holding off the very powerful Thunderbird offense. The Thunderbirds made one last push and Leah Furutani beat Biagioni with a header after UFV were unable to clear the ball after a UBC corner kick.
With the match tied at three, and under five minutes to go the Cascades were not to be denied on this wet night as Kuyer headed in a Marie Vanbenkov, Langley, BC pass to give the visitors the victory and a four match unbeaten streak.
“Ellen was lethal today, we challenged her to be more aggressive going to goal and she responded,” said Giesbrecht. “For us to reach our goals we need our strikers to be scoring, Danika (Snook) scored twice yesterday (against TWU) and Ellen with 3 today, that’s great for our program.”
