The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades dropped their fourth straight CWUAA regular season game in a row, 2-1, to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, at Bateman Park. The Cascades record falls to 1-4-0.
The Cascades started off slowly and the Huskies, now 3-1-1 in CWUAA play, capitalized early beating UFV’s goalkeeper Colton Keam, Langley, BC at the five minute mark on a goal by Myles Shedden, Saskatoon, SK who received a pass from Adam Laing, Saskatoon, SK and beat Keam to the far post to give the visiting Huskies the advantage. Saskatchewan continued to pressure UFV’s defense but Keam kept the Cascades in the game. The pressure continued and at the 29 minute mark the Huskies doubled their lead when Jerson Barandica-Hamilton, Isla Mujeres, Mexico finished a great serve from Paul Craig, Charlottetown PEI to give Saskatchewan a two goal lead at the intermission.
The one Cascade golden opportunity in the first half came off the foot of Stuart Rowlands, Chilliwack, BC who beat the entire Huskie defense only to hit the post.
In the second half, the Cascades started to mount an attack and controlled more of the midfield and the game. Their hard work paid off with 8 minutes remaining and not to be out done by his countrymen, UFV’s Juan Pablo Mora Perea, Morelia, Mexico scored the Cascades first goal in 6 halves. While Mora Perea finished, it was the hard work of Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC to win the ball at center field and set up Mora Perea so he could easily beat the Huskies goalkeeper, Mark Diakiw, Saskatoon, SK.
The Cascades kept pressure on the Saskatchewan defense and with no time left, UFV had one last opportunity but Diakiw made the save on a corner kick as the referee blew his whistle to end the match.
The players of the match were Saskatchewan’s Shedden and UFV’s Ravi Singh, Abbotsford, BC. Singh had a strong game for UFV especially on defense keeping the Saskatchewan midfielders from taking long shots on Keam.
“We played well in the second half, said UFV Head Coach Alan Errington. “We were unlucky on a couple shots otherwise we could have earned a result today!”
