UBC Thunderbirds defeat UFV Cascades, 1-0, in men’s soccer, in Vancouver, BC.

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 1-0, in CWUAA regular season action, Friday night at Thunderbird Park, in Vancouver, BC. For the second straight match UFV loses to the referee’s whistle as a penalty kick decides the match, late in the second half. The Cascades regular season record falls to 1-2-0 for 3-points as they face TWU, in Langley, on Saturday night, at 7:00PM.

The first half was exciting as both teams came out strong looking to score the matches first goal.  The Cascades looking to improve to two wins in the early part of the 2010 CWUAA season tested UBC goalkeeper Zach Kalthoff, but UFV could not find the back of the net.  The Cascades rookie netminder Colton Keam, Langley, BC also made several key saves to keep the game scoreless.  The Cascades mounted six shots in the first half off five corner kicks.
The second half started with UFV being aggressive in the Thunderbirds half of the field testing the UBC defense and being awarded several more corner kicks, which the Cascades offense was unable to capitalize on!  The Thunderbirds started to mount an attack of
their own midway through the second half and were awarded a corner kick at the 69th minute of play which resulted in the referee calling an infraction against the UFV defense and for the second straight game awarding the opposition a penalty kick late in the match.
The Thunderbirds Marco Visintin made no mistake as he beat Keam to give the home side a one goal lead.
The Cascades did not quit, they pushed for the tying goal and twice Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC sent perfect corner kicks into the UBC box but both Brent Wantke, Langley, BC and Juan Pablo Morea Perea, Morelia, Mexico shots missed the mark.  With no time left the Cascades had one last opportunity but Stuart Rowlands, Chilliwack, BC’s shot went high and UBC held onto their one goal lead and their second CWUAA victory of the regular season.
