The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (CWUAA-CIS) swept the two-game exhibition series with the Carleton University Ravens (OUA East-CIS), winning 1-0, on Saturday, at Bateman Park, in Abbotsford, BC. The Cascades now sport a perfect 3-0-0 non-conference record in 2010.
The game was intense from the opening whistle to the final one. It had the atmosphere of a mid-season match between two teams shooting for a post season berth. The Ravens again like the first match had the first few golden opportunities to open the scoring, but the Cascades defense led by first year Goalkeeper Colton Keam, Langley, BC continued to frustrate the high powered Raven offense. The Ravens registered 4 shots on goal and were awarded 8 first half corner kicks but could not solve the Cascade defense.
In the second half, UFV started to build momentum and had created several scoring chances before being awarded a direct kick at the 80th minute. Second year midfielder, Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC, scored off the direct shot to register the game’s lone goal, beating Carleton’s goalkeeper Sam Hincks, Guelph, Ontario. Carleton created one last chance to tie, but Keam made the save and the Cascades held on for their third straight exhibition victory.
“This was a another good step for our young team, “said UFV Head Coach Alan Errington. “They (Carleton) are a quality side. It just helps build our confidence for the regular season.”
