Cascades beat Vikes in final seconds to earn split in Victoria

VICTORIA – The University of the Fraser Valley erased a 23-point second half deficit to defeat the UVic Vikes 79-77 in Canada West men’s basketball action Saturday in Victoria.

The win gives the Cascades, who lost by one point in the final seconds Friday, a split of their weekend series in Victoria.

Fraser Valley is now 9-7, and holds down fourth place in the Pacific Division standings.

“The type of character we have in that type of adverse situation really showed itself tonight,” said head coach Barnaby Craddock. “I couldn’t be prouder of the heart these guys showed with their season on the line. The guys should be proud of themselves. It was an exciting game.”

The Vikes are now 8-7.

James Elliott scored the go-ahead basket in the final seconds, and the Cascades defence held for the victory.

Zeon Gray had a game-high 23 points for Fraser Valley. Kyle Grewal had 17 points, including nine in the final quarter.

Sam Freeman hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 12 points.

The Cascades were out-rebounded 23-22.

The Cascades shot 52 per cent, and made such clutch shots from beyond the arc in the final quarter.

Fraser Valley returns home to face Trinity Western University in its final series of the regular season Feb. 5-6.
