Envision Athletic Centre, Abbotsford—The surging Fraser Valley Cascades scored a season high 104 points, as they coasted to 25 point victory over the visiting TWU Spartans in Men’s Basketball action Friday night. UFV’s Victory in this battle of Fraser Valley rivals, puts the Cascades in the driver’s seat for the third and final guaranteed Pacific division playoff spot. Only if the Spartans or Victoria Vikes win their two remaining games, and the Cascades lose tomorrows rematch could UFV be caught. The Cascades are two wins ahead of UVIC and hold the tie breaker over TWU who trail the Cascades by a game. Both UVIC and TWU have difficult games remaining on the road at CIS #2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.
Fraser Valley led from start to finish tonight, as they managed to win each of the four quarters, and were leading by 4 after the first quarter and 16 at the half (48-32).
Sam Freeman lit up the Envision Athletic Centre, as he hit 6 for 10 behind the arc, on his way to a team leading 35 points. Fraser Valleys other starting guards were also in double figure scoring as Zeon Gray had 20, and Joel Friesen had 16 and a team leading 9 rebounds.
As high scoring as the Cascades were on offense, it was a gritty defensive effort that really had the Cascade faithful in Abbotsford clapping their hands. The cascades swarming post defense held TWU leading scorer Jacob Doerksen to a season low 9 points on 30% shooting from the field. The Spartans were led in scoring by Calvin Westbrook who had 20 points on 7-16 shooting from the field.
“Tonight was a big win for our program, and a well deserved one” said head coach Barnaby Craddock. “We showed that if we play with focus on every possession we will put ourselves in a position to be successful.”
“We will see how the season plays out, but I would like to see our guys get a taste of the playoffs this season, they have definitely earned it with some big wins on the road and down the stretch,” Added Craddock.
Game two of the season series is 8pm, Saturday Feb 6th in Abbotsford at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre
