Cascades Topped by Blues

VICTORIA,BC- The University of the Fraser Valley Women’s Volleyball team headed into Saturday’s bronze medal match of the 2010 BCCAA Championship having already played a remarkable tournament. The team demonstrated extreme talent, both offensively and defensively.

After jumping out to an early lead in the first set, (25-22) it looked as though the Cascades would replicate last year’s results; beating the Blues in the bronze medal match in three straight sets in 2009. Though it was the Capliano Blues who had different plans, battling the Cascades hard and converting on their chances, taking the next three sets. (26-24, 25-13, 25-18) With the win, the Blues take home the bronze medal.

“The girls played tough and came out strong,” stated Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “We did very well in the first two sets, and got a bit unlucky to lose in the second set. Capilano got on a roll and we were unable to recover. It was a bit of a disappointment, our goal was to finish in the top two, but after facing a very strong UBCO team yesterday, we were unable to come up with the win today.”

Fifth year Kristine Ewald took home the Player of the Match for UFV, while first year Jacqueline Caverly took home the award for Capilano.

The loss to the Blues concludes the 2010 BCCAA Provincial tournament for the Cascades, and marks the end of a valiant season.
