UFV Men’s basketball add Okanagan recruits

ABBOTSFORD, BC- University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball head coach Barnaby Craddock has received the commitment of two elite level student-athletes out of Kelowna. Dean Kmyta and Ryan Fahandag are the two players who will gear up for the Cascades this fall, both having played previously for UBC-Okanagan. Extremely talented, with plenty of post-secondary experience, these signings will be joining the Cascades line up this fall.

Dean Kmyta, a 6’1” guard from UBC-Okanagan, will be entering into the Faculty of Arts program at UFV in September. Dean was a former teammate of Ryan at UBC-Okanagan in the 2008-2009 season, helping lead the team to the CCAA men’s basketball nationals. Dean averaged 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game in the 2008-2009 season. Adding to his value, Dean was former teammates with current Cascades Joel Friesen, Sam Freeman and Josh Kufske when they were all members of the bronze medal winning BC Juvenile provincial team in 2007.

“I’m really excited about getting the opportunity to play at the CIS level at UFV, and reunite with my teammates from the Basketball BC team,” noted new guard Dean Kmyta. “I am very optimistic about how far we can go together and hope that my hard work and enthusiasm will help contribute in getting our team to the next level.”

“Dean is a physically mature guard that gives us the depth we need at this position,” stated head coach Barnaby Craddock. “He is CIS ready now, and I believe has a very bright future UFV.”

Ryan Fahandag, a 6’5” wing from UBC-Okanagan, will be studying in the Kinesiology program this September at UFV. Ryan has been a starter for the past two years at UBC-O, averaging 16.8 points and 5 rebounds per game in this past 2009-2010 season.

“I am excited about attending UFV,” stated Ryan Fahandag. “It is a great opportunity for me to grow as a basketball player, and get the education I want at the same time”.

“Ryan has developed into an elite level post secondary player over his two years at UBC-Okanagan,” affirmed head coach Barnaby Craddock. “He is able to come in and contribute right away to our program, and will fit in perfectly with the fast breaking game we like to play.”

The men’s basketball program at UFV is well on their way to having another successful year with the signing of Kmyta and Fahandag. With more experience added, the program will look to go deeper into the post season in their upcoming campaign.
