UFV Cascades fall to the Cal State University Northridge Matadors, 96-56, at the Envision Athletic Centre
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (Canada West-CIS) fell to the Cal State University Northridge Matadors (Division I-NCAA), 96-56, in exhibition preseason play at home in the Envision Athletic Centre. A series of turnovers and a strong Matador offense proved to be a challenge for the young UFV men’s basketball squad. This is the first preseason game played by the men’s team, as well as the first game with Head Coach Adam Friesen at the helm.
The Matadors came out strong, led by Josh Greene, Los Angeles, CA who led all scorers with 17 points for the game. The Matadors opened the scoring and quickly built up a double digit lead in the first quarter, aided by a 10-0 run. Cal State U Northridge also displayed great defense, holding UFV to six second quarter points. Cal State led by 32 points at the half. Kevon Parchment, Toronto, ON, led all Cascades scorers with six points, Nathan Kendall, Abbotsford, BC, had five points.
In the third quarter the young UFV team started to find their legs and held the Matadors to 22 points while outscoring them by one. The fourth quarter, both teams used their reserves as the visitors won by 40 points. Jordan Blackman, Abbotsford, BC, and Parchment each scored 11 points to lead UFV. Sean Ashkenazy, North Vancouver, BC, led the Cascades with 10 total rebounds.
“The first half was a learning curve for our team. We improved our play in the second half and the team realizes we have to play harder, more physical basketball to compete in Canada West this season.” said UFV head Coach Adam Friesen.
