Game One

Lakehead defeats UNBC 88-72, in the “Battle of the Wolves” at Envision Athletic Centre

Abbotsford, BC….The Lakehead University Thunderwolves (OUA-West) defeated the UNBC Timberwolves (Canada West) 88-72, in game one of the Honda Way men’s basketball weekend, at the Envision Athletic Centre, in Abbotsford, BC.

The Timberwolves, playing in their first year in the CIS, came out strong and gave the defending OUA West champion Thunderwolves all they could handle. The Timberwolves matched Lakehead basket for basket and trailed by five points after the first quarter. The second quarter, while close, belonged to UNBC as they narrowed Lakehead’s lead to four points at the break. Both teams were selective in their first half shots but very accurate as UNBC shot 45 percent and Lakehead 50 percent at the break. UNBC’s Joel Rybachuk led all scorers at the intermission with 13 points. Joe Hart was tops on Lakehead with 8.

The second half belonged to the more experienced Lakehead team as they slowly wore down the young Timberwolves team. Up by six after three quarters, the Thunderwolves went on two mini runs to expand their lead to 16 points midway through the final quarter and held on for the 16 point win. The Thunderwolves shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half to end the game at a 55 percent clip. UNBC was also on target as they shot 53 percent for the game.

Greg Carter led all Lakehead players with a game high 23 points. Carter also recorded 5 assists and 5 rebounds and was named the Thunderwolves “Player of the Game.” Dwayne Harvey added 15 points and Ben Johnson and Anthony McIntosh each contributed 10 points in the win. The Timberwolves were led by Francis Rowe with 18 points and 2 steals. Rowe was named the UNBC “Player of the Game.” Rybachuk scored four second half points to finish with 17.

Game Two

UFV Cascades defeat Langara College Falcons, 75-60, in game two of Honda Way Men’s Basketball Weekend

Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Langara College Falcons (PACWEST-CCAA) 75-60, tonight in game two of the Honda Way men’s basketball weekend event.

The Cascades jumped out to an early lead on six consecutive points to start the game. The Cascades also held the Falcons to 14 points as their defense was in top form. The Cascades continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as Sam Freeman hit two key three point baskets to give UFV the eight point lead at the break. Freeman led all scorers with 13 points and Jordan Blackman added 10 points at the break as UFV had seven different players contribute in the half. The Cascades shot 55 percent from the floor and played near flawless ball with only one turnover. Jesse Jeffers led the Falcons with 9 first half points.

The second half was all Cascades as they dominated their PACWEST opponent outscoring them by a seven points and holding Langara to nine fourth quarter points. Coach Adam Friesen was able to play ten different players who all scored at least two points in the victory. Freeman led the way with a game high 19 points; he was named the Cascades “Player of the Game.” Kyle Grewal added 14 points and Jordan Blackman 10 points as the three Cascades in double figures.

“We played a very hard working well coached Langara squad tonight, as coaches we saw some areas that need to improve,” said Friesen. “We are looking forward to tomorrow night’s game against Lakehead.”

On Day two the Cascades will take on Lakehead University at 6PM and the UNBC Timberwolves will play McMaster University Marauders at 8PM.
