Cascade rowers’ hard work pays off at Beat the Beast

The University of the Fraser Valley rowing program turned in a series of outstanding results at the Mainland Indoor Rowing Championships – also known as Beat the Beast – at St. Georges School in Vancouver on Feb. 3.

UFV’s Clayton DeVries (left) and Mitchell Wierks (centre) came first and third, respectively, in the university senior men’s division at Beat the Beast.

The event brought together club rowers from around the Lower Mainland, along with university rowers from UFV and SFU.

Two-and-a-half months of five-days-a-week winter training with weights and rowing machine (ergometer) culminated in this championship, which lets the rowers know where they stand against their competitors and what they’re bringing to the boat crew they want to be with. UFV Rowing’s top athletes had some terrific results in the university category, against a number of competitors from SFU.
