The University of the Fraser Valley wrestling team warmed up for the first tournament of the Canada West season by posting a series of solid results against the Calgary Dinos in exhibition action on Friday.
The Cascades men’s squad defeated the host Dinos 24-18 in a dual meet, and the Cascades women’s team combined for a 1-1 record against Calgary opponents. The exhibition matches were held on the eve of the Dino Invitational, which runs Saturday at the U of C.
Reigning Canada West and U SPORTS national champ Brad Hildenbrandt was reliably brilliant, defeating Calgary’s Joseph Duffy 10-0 in the 120 kg weight class. But it was the Cascades’ youngsters who turned in revelatory performances. Sophomore Amtoj Dhaliwal (90 kg) won 10-0 over Malek Amr, and rookies Omar Raghuzar (8-0 win via pin over Tamir Bulga at 65 kg), Jacob Torres (11-1 win over Juyong Lee at 61 kg) and Parker McBride (14-3 win over Cam Hicks at 54 kg) all emerged victorious. Haseeb Javed, Karan Dhillon and Kamil Golowko all dropped decisions to their Calgary counterparts.
On the women’s side, Karla Godinez Gonzalez (55 kg) defeated Calgary’s Vivian Mark 10-0, and Glaysia Sparling (82 kg) fell to Erin Geddie.
“All the young guys wrestled really well, as did Brad as expected,” Cascades head coach Raj Virdi said. “And Karla was really good – you can see that she’s matured.”
