Cascades hoopsters host Vikes in exhibition games

Daniel Adediran and the Cascades men’s basketball team faces their first U SPORTS competition of the season this weekend, as they host UVic.

The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams continue their preseason preparations this weekend with a series of home games against the Victoria Vikes.

The Cascades and Vikes don’t face each other during Canada West regular-season play in 2017-18, and given that fact and their proximity to one another, it made scheduling an exhibition series a natural fit.

Games run Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m., North Gym) and Saturday (women 1 p.m., men 3 p.m., South Gym) at the Envision Financial Athletic Centre.

For the Cascades men’s hoopsters, the dates with the Vikes represent their first preseason games of the fall against a U SPORTS opponent.

“We’re going up against really strong competition that’s always really well-coached and prepared, and we’re going to get a good test to see where we are at this stage of the preseason,” UFV men’s head coach Adam Friesen said.

The UFV women’s squad began its exhibition schedule in earnest last week with games against the Brandon Bobcats, Alberta Pandas and Carleton Ravens, and head coach Al Tuchscherer is looking for his team to build on those performances.

“It’s about refining our game and preparing to be the best version of ourselves,” he explained. “We started to build on some execution things this past weekend offensively, and that needs to continue to evolve. And we need to be a lot tighter in setting our defence and communicating.”

The Cascades basketball teams open the Canada West regular season on the road vs. the UBC Thunderbirds Oct. 27-28, and home-opening weekend is Nov. 3-4 vs. the Mount Royal Cougars.

Sara Simovic and the Cascades are looking to build cohesion at both ends of the court this weekend.
