UFV Cascades men’s basketball team defeat UBC Okanagan Heat, 108 – 63, at EAC

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat, 108 -63, to improve their Canada West conference record to 5-1. The Cascades will now go on the road to Saskatchewan and Alberta before breaking for exams.

The Cascades came out strong tonight and continued where they left off last night with great defensive play and strong shooting (57 percent at the break). UFV build up a seven point lead after the first quarter and dominated the second quarter out scoring their opponents from UBC Okanagan by 22 points. The 29 point halftime lead is the largest for UFV this season.

Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC leads all Cascades with 13 points at the intermission, Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC added 12 points. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC leads the Cascades with six total rebounds at the break. The Heat’s top scorer is Yassine Ghomari, Vancouver, BC with 10 halftime points.

The second half might have been one of the Cascades best halves of the entire season. Playing strong defense, UFV held UBC Okanagan to 17 points in the third quarter and led by as many as 48 points in the half. The Cascades shot 73 percent in the second half and 65 percent overall for the game. This marks the second game in four that the UFV offense hit the century mark and the 45 point margin of victory is the largest this season.

Ten different Cascades scored at least two points in the victory led by Moedt’s 18 point performance. Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC added 17 points and Grewal finished up with 15 as six Cascades were in double figures. Grewal and Freeman led UFV with six rebounds each as the Cascades out rebounded UBC Okanagan 37 to 23.
I thought our execution was much improved from friday. We Managed to get the looks we wanted and I was happy with the performance of guys coming in off the bench. We have a really tough road trip next week, and will have to carry this type of performance with us if we want to be competitive,” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock.

The Heat’s Ghomari was the game’s top scorer with 24 points. Julian Asselstine, Coquitlam, BC added 10m points in the loss. Simon Pelland, North Vancouver, BC led the Heat with six rebounds.

UFV 18 33 28 29 = 108 (5-1)
