Olive/Reitsma duo wins bronze at Head of the River

The University of the Fraser Valley rowing club took a small crew to the Head of the River regatta at Crescent Beach on Sunday, and came home with a bronze medal courtesy Michelle Olive and Jayme Reitsma.

The event was an opportunity for Cascades head coach Liz Chisholm to get some newer recruits some race experience against many of the top club crews in the Lower Mainland. The course is a tough one, winding around the Nico-Wynd Golf Course from Highway 99 down to the railway trestle bridge at Crescent Beach and then out into the salt chuck to the finish line at the pier.

Olive was the only Cascade to have participated previously at Head of the River, and she joined Reitsma in an open 2x, going up against crews. They turned in a very good performance, and finished third.

In the open crew categories, the women placed fifth overall, with the UFV men’s boats – featuring Andrew Stahl (men’s 1x) and Graeson Lounsbury/Kyle Fischer (men’s 2x) – placing sixth and seventh, respectively.

“I am pleased with the experience picked up by this small crew today, and we have a good amount of time to regroup and make plans for more serious racing coming up,” Chisholm said.

Major events coming up for the Cascades this fall include the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships (Oct. 28 at Elk Lake, Victoria, B.C.) and the Canadian University Rowing Championships (Nov. 5-6, Burnaby Lake).
