The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team struggled in its first road game of the Canada West campaign, dropping a 5-0 decision to the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Kayla Blacquiere paced the Pronghorns (1-1-1) with two goals and an assist, Lindsay Amatto also scored twice, and Nikki Furukawa added a single.
The Cascades (0-2-1) will look to get back on track Sunday as they visit the Calgary Dinos (12 p.m. MT / 11 a.m. PT).
“We were very flat in the first half,” Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht said. “We paid the price for being reactive, and we dug ourselves a hole we couldn’t get out of. Our opponents took their chances well.
“It’s important we learn that in Canada West women’s soccer, a team must earn the points they accumulate. Today’s flat performance was uncharacteristic of us; however, full credit to our opponent.”
The Pronghorns opened the scoring 17 minutes in, as Blacquiere fed the ball through the middle of the field to Amatto, who made no mistake for her first of the season.
Lethbridge’s Erica Augsten nearly doubled the lead two minutes later, but Cascades rookie goalkeeper Joven Sandhu, making her first career Canada West start, made a spectacular save to push the ball over the crossbar.
Blacquiere, though, broke through in the 37th minute to make it 2-0, collecting a pass from Furukawa and sending a shot over Sandhu.
The Cascades had the first two scoring chances of the second half – Brittney Zacharuk and Harneet Dadrao both had good looks, but both missed the net.
The Pronghorns pulled away from there, with Blacquiere, Furukawa and Amatto scoring in succession.
Lethbridge finished with a 16-7 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in shots on target; the Cascades, meanwhile, earned seven corners to the Pronghorns’ four.
