UFV Cascades defeat University of Manitoba Bisons, 101-76, at Envision Athletic Centre

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons, 101-76, at the Envision Athletic Centre to improve their Canada West regular season conference record to 2-1. The Cascades will host the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night.

The Cascades came out strong in their home opener, at the Envision Athletic Centre and quickly establish a double digit lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Cascades continued top dominant on the boards leading to a 19 point halftime lead over the Bisons. Sheldon Bjorgaard, Abbotsford, BC and Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC each scored 12 points at the break. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 11 points and Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC and Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC each pulled down 7 boards as UFV out rebounded Manitoba 33 to 18 at the intermission.

Jonar Huertas, Winnipeg, Manitoba led all BIsons at the half with 10 points. Kevin Oliver, Winnipeg, Manitoba leads all Bisons with 4 rebounds at halftime.

In the second half, UFV played excellent defense holding Manitoba to 37 points as they outscored the Bisons by six to win their home opener by 25 points. Friesen led all Cascades with a game high 24 point performance. Joel added three assists and four rebounds in the win. Freeman added 17 points as five different Cascades scored ten or more points. Grewal led UFV with 1 rebounds.

Huertas led all Bisons with 11 points as three different Bisons were in double figures. Oliver’s six total rebounds was tops on Manitoba. UFV out rebounded Manitoba 57 to 32 for the game.

“We are working to play 40 focused minutes of basketball, and tonight I thought we did a good job of playing with focus for the first three quarters. Rebounding was very strong for us tonight, and I thought our posts did a great job of finding open shooters and guys made there shots,” said UFV Head Coach Barnaby Craddock..
“Last week we took our foot of the gas in the second half of Saturdays game and it cost us. So our goal stays the same, to keep working towards playing a full game of our basketball Friday and Saturday night.
