Cascades at Carleton University’s 6th Annual Metro Glebe Women’s Basketball Tournament
UFV defeats Brock, 69-61 and UQAM, 89-63, face Carleton for title on Sunday
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated Brock University Badgers (OUA West) 69-61, on Friday and UQAM Citadins (RSEQ), 89-63 on Saturday to advance to the title game against the host Carleton University Ravens. The games are being played at Carleton University’s Ravens’ Nest.
On Friday led by fifth year veteran guard, Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba the Cascades who hit several key free throws down the stretch, UFV defeated their OUA west opponents by eight points. The Cascades tied at the half, 35 each, led by the slimmest of margins throughout the second half and with two minutes remaining Klassen hit her free throws and UFV defense kept Brock from coming back. Sam Kurach, Abbotsford, BC led UFV with 14 points and Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with 10 points in the victory over Brock.
“Girls played an inconsistent game but got the win. We had good moments, but we struggled defensively at times. It’s important to get better every game and tomorrow we’ll need to take some strides to compete with UQAM. It’s a start,” said Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
On Saturday, the Cascades defeated UQAM Citadins by 26 points. The Cascades led from opening whistle to closing as they move into the title game against the host Carleton University Ravens. The Cascades were led by Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with 18 points. Other Cascades in double figures, were Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC with 15, Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Nicole Wierks with 13 each and Kayli Sartori, Abbotsford, BC with her first CIS double figure performance at 11 points. Sarah Wierks led all Cascades with 10 total rebounds.
“Girls moved the ball well tonight, played really unselfish basketball. 21 assists and 6 players with 8 or more points is what we are looking for from our squad,” said Tuchscherer. “Defensively we were better, but we did have a second quarter lapse. Need to be more consistent at the end of the floor, but we made strides today.”
