UFV Cascades defeat WLU Golden Hawks, 80-70, at UBC Invitational Tournament
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (OUA West), 80-70, on day two, of the UBC Thunderbirds men’s basketball invitational tournament. The Cascades go into their final tournament game tomorrow, against Concordia University Stingers (RSEQ) with a perfect 2-0 record.
The Cascades jumped out to an early double digit lead and led from the opening whistle to closing. The Cascades built up a quick 16 point lead and led by 22 points at the intermission. While the Cascades were out scored in the second half by 12 points they won the game by a comfortable margin of 10 points. Include last night’s 20 point victory over Memorial Seahawks, UFV is a plus 30 for the tournament going into Sunday’s last game at 2PM.
The Cascades were led by Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with a game high 25 points. Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC added 18 points and Michael James, Winnipeg, Manitoba 12 points in the victory over WLU. Grewal pulled down 11 total rebounds to lead UFV. The Cascades out rebounded the Golden Hawks 46 to 29.
“We came out tonight with a solid effort on the defensive end, and that set the tone for our offense and helped us build a lead. Laurier is a talented and well coached team, and I thought our guys played like we had something to prove tonight’” said Head Coach Barnaby Craddock. “It was especially nice to be able to score without relying on the three point shot. Joel (Friesen) did a good job penetrating and creating offense.”
