The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades entertained Steve Nash’s alma mater the University of Santa Clara Broncos at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades fell to the Broncos 87-84, in overtime. They finish their three NCAA exhibition games with an 0-3 record.
Tonight’s game was an excellent preseason contest with UFV jumping out to a slim lead of two points after the first quarter. UFV continued to keep the lead and went into the locker room up by six points at the half. The third quarter was even as UFV continued to hold onto the lead going in the final quarter, but Santa Clara came to life and tied the game with five minutes remaining the lead traded hands several times before it was clear Santa Clara was going to play its third overtime game against a Canada West school. In the overtime the lead changes hands four times before a last second three point shot by Santa Clara won the game, 87-84.
Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC led all Cascades with 24 points. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 18 points and Mike James, Winnipeg, Manitoba 12 points. Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC and James each pulled down 7 rebounds to lead all Cascades. John McArthur, Danville, California and Brandon Clark, East Chic ago, Illinois each scored 16 points for Santa Clara.
