UFV Cascades Men’s Golf team Win Bear Mountain Golf Tournament
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades Men’s Golf Team picked up the 2011 season where they left off in 2010 with a win at the inaugural Bear Mountain Collegiate Championship hosted by Camosun College on Vancouver Island this past weekend. The 2-day event hosted at the prestigious Bear Mountain Golf Resort brought together university teams from across Western Canada including 2010 Alberta Champs Mount Royal University.
The Cascades jumped out to an insurmountable 15 stroke lead on day 1 paced by Drew St. Cyr’s, Langley, BC, opening round 69. The 2010 CCAA national silver medalists from UFV hung on in the cold and rainy conditions on Sunday to post a 7-stroke victory in the team event. In the individual overall, 5th year senior Brett Stewart (Abbotsford, BC) ended up in a first place tie with UFV teammate Aaron Pauls (Chilliwack, BC) for what proved to be a dominant performance for the nation’s 5th ranked program.
“It’s great to start 2011 off on a winning note,” said tournament co-champion Brett Stewart, “We know we have a lot of work ahead in the lead up to the RCGA Championships in June. This is what we work all year for and the win is a big boost for the team and for me personally.”
The Cascades men’s golf team is now looking ahead to defending their title at the Bandon Dunes Invitational in Bandon, Oregon in early May before heading to the RCGA University Championships at Royal Ashburn Golf Club just outside Toronto in June.
