The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball program celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Shoot for the Cure fundraising initiative by raising a team-record $5,132 for breast cancer research this year.
The Cascades hosted a Shoot for the Cure dinner at the Phoenix Ballroom on Jan. 26, highlighted by a powerful speech from breast cancer survivor Feather Bryce, and solicited donations and sold pink T-shirts at their subsequent home games vs. the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Jan. 27-28. They also collected donations via a GoFundMe page, and all told, it added up to a record cheque for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
“It was a really good team effort this year, coming together for a great cause, led by assistant coach Chantel Ewert and several players on the team,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer said. “I’m really proud of all they did to contribute.”
Shoot for the Cure, a coast-to-coast fundraising initiative established by the CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, has amassed over $1 million in total donations over its 10 years. This season, for the sixth year in a row, all 47 CIS women’s basketball schools took part and combined to raise $122,274.97. The Cascades have participated in Shoot for the Cure since its inception.
