UFV Cascades Men’s Soccer: UFV Cascades and TWU Spartans play scoreless third place match at Keg Classic

Victoria, BC….The UFV Cascades and TWU Spartans played a scoreless draw at the third place match of the Keg Classic, at Centennial Field, in Victoria, BC.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades came out and played a great defensive first half holding the Trinity Western University Spartans to no shots on goal.  The Cascades led by 4th year goalkeeper Jake Kubanski, Chilliwack, BC move the ball around the park well creating numerous opportunities to score the game’s first goal.  The Spartans goalkeeper, Andrew Hicks also played well in the first half making three key saves on shots by Craig Robinson, Chilliwack, BC, Connor O’Neill, Abbotsford, BC and Sahib Phagura, Abbotsford, BC.  UFV recorded 5 shots on goal in the half and the only corner kick which narrowly turned into the match’s first goal.

“It was a very good first half for the guys, we played well and were unlucky on several scoring chances,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.

The second half started with UFV continuing to pressure Hicks and Spartan defense.  Both O’Neill and Robinson had early chances to break the deadlock.  The Cascades Ravi Singh, Abbotsford, BC has had a great tournament holding the top Canada West scorers on both Victoria (yesterday) and TWU today off the scoreboard.  “Ravi has been our most consistent player all weekend,” said Errington.  The third year defender has also created several excellent scoring chances for the offense.

With 15 minutes remaining UFV had five straight corner kicks putting great pressure on the TWU defense.  The Spartans held their own as UFV could only muster several shots at Hicks.  Justin Sekhon, Abbotsford, BC stole the ball from a TWU defender with 10 minutes remaining but a Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC just missed curving a corner kick in TWU’s net.

The match ended scoreless as UFV outshot TWU 11 to 3 for the game.
