Purchases from the Cascades’ concession stand this Friday (Nov. 11) will do more than just take the edge off fans’ hunger, thanks to the efforts of four senior-level business students.
As part of a group assignment for their Business 408 class, Danica Kump, Joel Kleingeltink, Shayna Gallinger and Emma Wu will be operating the Cascades’ concession with all proceeds benefitting Ruth and Naomi’s Mission of Chilliwack.
The class is called Teamwork in Organizations, and the assignment calls for each group to undertake a project to benefit the community. Kump (women’s soccer) and Kleingeltink (men’s volleyball) are Cascades student-athletes, and multiple group members had connections to Ruth and Naomi’s – Kump had volunteered there on several occasions with the women’s soccer team – so this initiative was a natural fit. The UFV athletic department agreed to turn over the concession stand to the group for one evening.
The student group will also be collecting non-perishable food items on Friday and Saturday for donation to Ruth and Naomi’s.
“Through our involvement in athletics, we thought we’d be able to reach a larger audience and provide more resources for Ruth and Naomi’s Mission to do the work that they’ve been doing,” Kleingeltink explained.
“This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and not take things for granted,” Kump added. “We’re very lucky to be going to UFV and to be in this class . . . it’s always nice to put a smile on people’s faces when they need an extra little bit of help.”
The Cascades’ basketball and volleyball teams are both in action at the Envision Athletic Centre on Friday. The basketball teams take on the Trinity Western Spartans in the South Gym (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.), and the volleyball teams host the Douglas Royals in the North Gym (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.).
