Cascades women surge to the lead on Day 1 of UFV Invitational, men’s team third

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s golf team is atop the standings following Day 1 of the UFV Invitational, while the Cascades men’s team finds itself in a tight four-way battle.

The tournament – the first of four 36-hole PacWest conference events – teed off on Saturday afternoon at Ledgeview Golf Club in Abbotsford.

Cascades rookie Sharon Park fired an opening-round 78 to surge to the top of a tightly packed women’s individual leaderboard, ahead of UBC Okanagan’s Emily Adams (79) and UFV teammates Hannah Dirksen (80), Jennifer Kell (83) and Ciara Melhus (84).

The Cascades women are setting the pace in the team standings, which counts each squad’s best three scores, with a total of 241 strokes to UBCO’s 247.

In the men’s team event, which takes into account each team’s best four scores, the Cascades combined for 297 strokes. That leaves them third in a four-team logjam – the Vancouver Island University Mariners are setting the pace (293), with UBCO (296) and Camosun (299) also firmly in the mix.

VIU’s Dallas Jones fired a 68 to stake out a one-stroke lead over UBCO’s Jacob Stewart and UFV’s Nick Guenther. Guenther is playing as an individual rather than as a member of the Cascades’ five-man roster this weekend. Zach Olson (71) paced the Cascades and sits solo fourth after the first round, followed by teammates Halen Davis (75), Nathan Bahnman (75), Kaleb Fisher (76) and Connor O’Dell (77).

The second and final round of the UFV Invitational commences at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at Ledgeview, and spectators are welcome.

In the PacWest golf season, individual and team titles are decided by cumulative scores over the four tournaments.
