The University of the Fraser Valley wrestling program is hosting the B.C. Open club wrestling championship at the Envision Athletic Centre on Sunday, June 12.
The event will bring together upwards of 150 young wrestlers from across B.C., along with a handful of teams from south of the border. The tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 12, and spectators are welcome.
The Cascades are also running a wrestling camp on the Friday and Saturday (June 10-11) prior to the tourney. The camp and tournament will feature multiple age groups, including Grades 11-12, Grades 8-10, and younger.
Registration for both the camp and the B.C. Open can be completed at bcwrestling.com. For more information, contact Cascades co-head coach Arjan Bhullar via email (arjan.bhullar@ufv.ca).
Bhullar said that the event is intended to serve as a warm-up for Team B.C. wrestlers competing in major tournaments this summer, such as the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford (July 21-24). Teams from Washington state and Nevada will also participate.
“The B.C. Open is a club championship,” Bhullar said. “You’ve got the BC School Sports high school tournament (in late February), and we’re trying to make this the equivalent for kids that train year-round. It’s a great prep tournament for kids up here, and south of the border.
“We hosted it off-campus last year, but we’re excited to bring it onto campus now. It gets the top athletes familiar with our campus and our program, and vice versa.”
