The University of the Fraser Valley men’s golf team finished the second round of the Canadian University/College Championship in the same position where they began the day – in fourth place.
The Cascades combined for a score of 301 on Wednesday, one stroke more than they required during Tuesday’s opening round, and closed the day tied for fourth in the team standings with the Niagara College Knights at 25 over par.
Heading into the third of four rounds on Thursday, the UBC Thunderbirds (-18), Queen’s Golden Gaels (+16) and Victoria Vikes (+18) occupy the podium positions.
Connor O’Dell led the way for UFV on Wednesday. It was a bounce-back effort from the two-time CCAA All-Canadian – after carding a six-over 78 on Tuesday, he responded with a two-under 70. The Maple Ridge, B.C. product was one of just 11 golfers in the 108-player men’s field to shoot under par, and he moved into a tie for 18th overall (+4 for the tournament).
Zach Olson remains the top Cascade in the individual standings – he followed Tuesday’s one-under 71 with a four-over 76, and he’s tied for 13th (+3 for the tourney). Connor McLellan fired a solid one-over 73 and sits tied for 21st (+5), followed by teammates Nathan Bahnman (+13, T66) and Kaleb Fisher (+25, T102).
“We made some early mistakes today and had to fight hard to post a half-decent day,” UFV head coach Chris Bertram said. “We haven’t come close to our potential yet, but we’re feeling good heading into Day 3.”
