The University of the Fraser Valley golf program opened its spring season with an exhibition match-play victory over the MacEwan Griffins on the weekend.

The Cascades and Griffins participated in a Ryder Cup-style format, with five males and three females competing for each team. At Abbotsford’s Ledgeview Golf and Country Club on Saturday, they played four-ball in the morning and alternate shot in the afternoon. On Sunday, they played singles matches at Sandpiper Golf Course in Harrison Mills.

The Cascades ended up amassing 11.5 points to the Griffins’ 4.5. Zach Olson and Nathan Bahnman led the way on the men’s side, each posting perfect 3-0 records. Ciara Melhus was the top Cascade on the women’s side, winning two of her three matches.

“They’ve been friends of ours for a few years now,” UFV head coach Chris Bertram said of the Griffins, noting that MacEwan has traveled to play in the Fraser Valley three times in the past 12 months. They participated in the Cascades’ 2015 Spring Invitational, and in the PING CCAA Golf National Championship hosted by UFV in October.

“This is the first time we’ve played team vs. team in a match-play environment with them. It was a good experience to get out and knock some winter rust off, and get ready for some big events on the horizon. It was nice to see that we had some players play really solidly, too. We’re in a good spot looking ahead.”

The Cascades’ spring season features trips to Bremerton, Wash. for the Olympic College Spring Invitational (March 31-April 1), and to Bandon, Ore. for the Southwest Oregon Invitational (May 8-9). They wrap things up at the Canadian University/College Championship at Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville, B.C. (May 31-June 3).
