The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team’s ninth annual Shoot for the Cure fundraising events generated just north of $4,600 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Cascades hosted a pub night and silent auction at Finnegan’s Pub & Grill on Thursday, Feb. 11, and they continued the fundraising effort the following evening at their annual Shoot for the Cure game vs. the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
Shoot for the Cure, a coast-to-coast fundraising initiative established by the CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, is now in its ninth year and is approaching $1 million in total donations. This season, for the fifth year in a row, all 47 CIS women’s basketball schools took part. The Cascades have participated in Shoot for the Cure since its inception.
“I thought the girls came together to do an exceptional job on this year’s fundraising drive,” UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer said. “We really exceeded our goals this year.”
Over the last five years, the Cascades have raised roughly $18,500 for the B.C./Yukon chapter of the CBCF, including $3,800 last season.
“I thought this year was awesome – we had a great turnout with lots of enthusiasm,” said Cascades third-year guard Hailey Kendall, who served as lead organizer for the event. “The team worked really hard to make it a success and it definitely was.”
