Cascades rowers to host Head of the Fort regatta on Saturday

IMG_9049The University of the Fraser Valley rowing program is hosting its eighth annual regatta, Head of the Fort, this Saturday on the Bedford Channel in Fort Langley.

The public is invited to attend the event, which features junior, university and Masters crews competing on a 6.5-kilometre course. The Cascades, the Simon Fraser University women, and many local rowing clubs from the Lower Mainland will be represented at the regatta.

There will be three launches – 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. – and the bridge over the Bedford Channel makes for a great viewing area for fans.

Cascades head coach Liz Chisholm said her athletes relish the opportunity to compete on their home course.

“It really matters to them, in the sense that the varsity athletes want to get faster and faster,” Chisholm said. “They know the home water, and the turn, which is difficult. It’s important for them for race experience.”

The Bedford Channel will be the site for the 2016 BC Summer Games rowing and kayaking events, and Chisholm noted that Saturday’s event will be important for the junior rowers in the field.

“This is an opportunity for them to be on the course for the BC Summer Games,” she said. “Knowing the water and how it moves will be helpful to those Summer Games athletes.”
