UFV A “BUZZ” WITH BASKETBALL MARCH MADNESS

Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley is a buzz with MARCH MADNESS as both basketball teams are ONE VICTORY from earning berths in their respective 2013 CIS National Championship “Elite 8” tournaments.  The men’s basketball team fresh off their quarterfinal best two out of three series win in Saskatoon will face the defending 2013 Pacific Division regular season champion UBC Thunderbirds, in Point Grey (Vancouver), BC on Friday March 1st.  The Cascades split the two game Canada West regular season series with UBC, in Point Grey, falling 76-71 and winning 89-77. The winner of Friday night’s Canada West semi-final game receives an automatic bid to the 2013 CIS men’s basketball national championship to be hosted by the Carleton Ravens, in Ottawa, Ontario.  UFV sports a 12-13 record going into Friday’s game (10-12 regular season, 2-1 playoffs).

The women’s basketball team also fresh off winning the Canada West best two out of three quarterfinal against the Saskatchewan Huskies, at the Envision Athletic Centre, are heading to Calgary, Alberta to participate for a third straight year in the Canada West “Elite 4” tournament.  The women are also one win from a trip to the 2013 CIS National Championship “Elite 8” tournament to be hosted by the Cougars, in Regina, Saskatchewan.  UFV lost to Regina, 59-55 in December in their only regular season meeting.  The Cascades and Cougars have a brief post season history, Regina defeated UFV in the Canada West semi-final game last year, 72-56, in Regina.  This will be the first post season game between the two schools on a neutral court.   UFV goes into the game 20-5 (18-4 regular season, 2-1 playoffs).
