Five Cascades named to PACWEST Men’s & Women’s Volleyball All-Star teams
Abbotsford, BC…..Five members of the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s and women’s volleyball teams have been named to the 2013 PACWEST All-Conference all-star teams. The women’s volleyball team, 2013 PACWEST regular season champions with a 22-2 record have five different student-athletes honored on the all-star teams. Kayla Bruce a fifth year middle from Surrey, BC was named to the conference’s first all-star team, while Brittany Stewart, a fifth year senior captain from Langley, BC, Krista Hogewoning, right side from Delta, BC and Kate Bilodeau, a fifth year outside from Grand Prairie, BC were all selected second team all-stars. Adam Chaplin, a second year left side from Mission, BC was named to the 2013 PACWEST second all-conference team.
Bruce was also named the PACWEST Female Volleyball Player of the year for a second straight year. The veteran led UFV and the conference in total offense with 365 points for a 4.56 average. Bruce was also first in blocks with 79 (0.79 average) and third in kills with 261 (a 3.26 average). “What an honor for Kayla to get the player of the year in the PACWEST. I could not be happier for her. In a year where there were a lot of deserving athletes it is very flattering for the conference to vote her as the recipient. This is everything to do with her compete level. Many athletes have moments of greatness. It is Kayla’s consistency that separates her from the rest. Well done!” said UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.
For Stewart this marks her third straight selection to the second team, for Hoegwoning and Bilodeau this is there first all-conference selection as Cascades. “This was as much a team award as it is the individuals receiving the award. For Brittany and Kate, it is a feather in their cap. What a great finish to their 5 year career. For Krista, it is fitting that she is with this group. I know she respects these graduating athletes greatly and we look for her to continue along the standards they have set,” said the fifth year head coach.
Chaplin led UFV to four straight wins down the stretch to help UFV earn the sixth and final playoff spot. The Mission resident finished fourth in PACWEST with 36 aces for an 0,41 average. “Adam is an incredible worker, and that has shown in his commitment to taking on our setting role, a position he hasn’t trained for several years,” commented UFV head coach Greg Russell.
Tome named PACWEST Rookie of the Year
Kira Tome, a first year setter from Surrey, BC was named the 2013 PACWEST Female Rookie of the Year. Tome played in all 24 PACWEST regular season games and finished 9th in digs (second on UFV) with 197 for a 2.59 average. She earned UFV Cascades Athlete of the Week honors once and was nominated for Female Athlete of the Week once. Joining Tome on the 2013 all-rookie team was Julianna Penner, a middle from Surrey, BC. Kurtis Strromdahl, a left side from Mission, BC was selected to the PASCWEST men’s all-rookie team.
“Kira Tome was also a very deserved all-star, but the problem is she executed an offense that made her teammates around her that much better. That is the greatest compliment I could give her, she made her teammates better. What a great year. Juliana had a great year. She was forced into action at very critical moments. Learning a new position this year and executing it at a high level… I was very impressed,” commented Bokenfohr. .
“It’s great to see both Adam and Kurtis recognized by the league for their contributions to our program this season. They, along with the rest of the team, have competed hard this year, especially in this last month, and we’re looking forward to seeing that same fight and energy this weekend in Cranbrook,” said Russell.
