The University of the Fraser Valley athletic department’s Cascades vs. Hunger initiative netted 935 pounds of food for the Abbotsford Food Bank.
The month-long project saw the Cascades collect non-perishable food items at home games throughout October, and all preseason basketball games featured free admission with a food donation.
The Cascades capped the month with the Halloween Walk and Knock – an annual tradition where athletes go door-to-door in Abbotsford soliciting contributions for the food bank.
“Our student-athletes are community leaders who see that their impact can be significant right here in their neighbourhood,” said Steve Tuckwood, UFV’s director of athletics and campus recreation. “The initiative they show in helping others is commendable and is part of them growing into concerned citizens who will make for a better Abbotsford for years to come.”
