UFV Cascades sweep CBC Bearcats in PACWEST Volleyball at EAC

Abbotsford, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team defeated the CBC Bearcats, 3-0, tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre and improved their PACWEST leading record to 21-3.  With the victory tonight the women’s volleyball program established a new school win mark of 21, the previous record was 20 set last year when the team finished 20-4.  The  Cascades have one regular season match remaining on Saturday night when they travel across town to face CBC in their gym.  UFV can not only win their 22nd match of the season but earn the program’s first ever regular season title.  The Cascades remain one game ahead of the VIU Mariners, 19-3, going into that last match on Saturday night.  Tonight’s set scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-11.

Fifth year veteran middle Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC playing in her final home game led UFV with 18 total offensive points.  Kayla recorded 13 kills and 5 blocks.  Kate Bilodeau, Grand Prairie, BC was right behind Bruce with 10 points on 3 aces and 7 kills.  Captain Brittany Stewart, Langley, BC, the third senior playing in her final home match, added 13 digs in the victory over CBC.

“I am very proud of our seniors tonight, they played very well and led us to victory over CBC,” commented UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.

The UFV Cascades men’s volleyball team stayed alive for the sixth and final PACWEST playoff spot with an exciting 3-1 victory over the CBC Bearcats.  The Cascades are 5-18, trail CBC by one game, 6-17, going into Saturday night’s final regular season game.  Basically the winner of Saturday night’s game goes to the PACWEST playoffs, in Cranbrook, the following weekend.  The loser is eliminated from post season play.  Tonight’s set scores were 25-16, 25-17, 25-27 and 25-23.  For the record CBC holds the tie breaker going into the final game 2-1 (7-6 in sets). 

The Cascades leaders tonight were Josh Togeretz, Yarrow, BC with 15 kills, Nicholas Vojnovic, Surrey, BC with 13 aces and Adam Chaplin, Mission, BC also recorded 4 aces and kept numerous volleys going with some unbelievable shots and dives on the court.

“We played as a team for a third straight game tonight,” said UFV head coach Greg Russell.  “I am looking forward to Saturday night and see if we can earn a post season berth.”  It would be the fifth straight year UFV would qualify for the BCCAA/PACWEST post season tournament.
