UBC Okanagan Heat defeat UFV Cascades men’s basketball team, 68-58, in Kelowna, BC

Kelowna, BC…The UBC Okanagan Heat defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team, 68-58, tonight in Kelowna, BC.  The Cascades Canada West Pacific Division record falls to 10-8, one game ahead of the TWU Spartans, at 9-9 for third place in the division.  The Heat improve to 3-16 and win at home for the first time this year.

The game started off where last night’s game ended with both teams playing strong defense and trading baskets.  The Heat led by two points after the first quarter.  The second quarter was the difference in tonight’s game.  UBC Okanagan played a great defensive scheme against UFV holding the Cascades to their lowest point total since joining the CIS seven years ago, five points.  The Heat were able to build a double digit lead as they went into the locker room up by 13 points.  UFV shot 38 percent from the floor in the half, Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC led UFV with 13 points, Freeman was 60 percent of UFV’s total first half offense.

In the third quarter, UBC Okanagan continued to keep the pressure on UFV holding them to 18 points and increasing their lead to 15 points going into the final quarter.  The Cascades had two mini runs in the final quarter aided mostly by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario scoring half of his 12 points in the final quarter.  UFV shot 42 percent in the half but could not click on offense all night.  Freeman finished with 20 points add Parchment’s 12 to that total and it was 55 percent of UFV’s total offensive production for the evening.  Parchment also had team highs in rebounds with 9 and steals with 3.  One very bright spot UFV has recorded 10 or more steals in every Canada West game this season, tonight was 11.

“UBC Okanagan played really well tonight and deserved the victory. We have got to put this one behind us and get back at it next weekend,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen.
