The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team moved up one spot to No. 5 in the latest Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national rankings released Tuesday morning.
The Cascades (5-0-1) are coming off a six-point weekend on the road which included wins over the Alberta Pandas (2-0 on Friday) and the UNBC Timberwolves (6-1 on Sunday). They’re the last remaining undefeated team in Canada West, and they’re the conference’s top team in the national rankings – UBC is No. 7, and Trinity Western is No. 9.
Head coach Rob Giesbrecht’s charges have been ranked in each of the first five CIS polls of the season, setting a program record for consecutive weeks in the rankings. The previous record of two was achieved at the start of the 2011 season.
This coming weekend, the Cascades make a road swing through Alberta. They’ll face the MacEwan Griffins (2-3-1) in Edmonton on Saturday and the Mount Royal Cougars (1-4-1) in Calgary on Sunday. Both games kick off at noon Mountain time (11 a.m. Pacific) and will be webcast at canadawest.tv (pay per view).

Cascades golf teams maintain positions in CCAA rankings
The University of the Fraser Valley golf teams both held steady in the new Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national rankings released Tuesday.
The Cascades men maintained the No. 3 spot behind their PacWest conference rivals, the Camosun Chargers, and the Humber Hawks of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
The UFV women’s team, meanwhile, stayed at No. 4 in their national poll. The top three teams are the Champlain Lions (RSEQ), the UBC Okanagan Heat (PacWest) and the Humber Hawks (OCAA).
Both Cascades golf squads sit second in the PacWest cumulative season standings with three of four conference tournaments in the books. The UFV men have accumulated 1,775 strokes on the season, 47 back of Camosun (1,728). The UFV women (1,013) are chasing UBCO (984).
Head coach Chris Bertram’s squads will spend the balance of the fall season playing host to high-profile events. This weekend, Oct. 3-4, UFV hosts the fourth and final PacWest tourney at Chilliwack Golf Club. It tees off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and Sunday’s action will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
The CCAA PING Golf National Championships run a week and a half later, Oct. 13-16, also at Chilliwack Golf Club. It will be UFV’s first time hosting CCAA golf nationals, and the event will draw teams from coast to coast.
