UFV Cascades Women’s Basketball Number One in Canada (CIS)

Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team is ranked number one in Canada in this week’s CIS Top Ten Poll.  The Cascades moved up one spot from second overall.  This marks the school’s first number one ranking in any sport in their seven year affiliation with the CIS.  The Cascades are currently 9-1 in the Pacific Division of Canada West and shared the top record in Canada West with Regina Cougars and Calgary Dinos both tied for first place in the Prairie Division.   The Cascades have enjoyed a tremendous first half to the Canada West regular season the lowest they have been ranked all year is 3rd in Canada.  The Cascades are a perfect 4-0 at home (Envision Athletic Centre) and 5-1 on the road.  The only loss was to Regina, by four points, 59-55, in Regina.

The Cascades are led by Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with a 13.3 ppg average and 7.9 rebounds per game. Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with a 12.1 average follows closely behind second year forward Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC with 11.8, the general studies major, scored a career high 27 points against Brandon right before the holiday break.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for things we’ve done in the past and as exciting as it is for UFV to have a team in this position, it’s not a guarantee of any future success.  The reality is that we are more focussed on the possibilities moving forward into 2013.  At this point the most important thing is that we have a great start to the second half of the season, continue to learn and grow every day, and be best prepared for the rigours of CIS playoff basketball,” commented Al Tuchscherer, head coach of the Cascades women’s basketball team.
