UFV Cascades Women’s Basketball team set to host CBCF Fund Raiser

Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team is proud to host a fundraiser in partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (BC/Yukon Chapter) on Thursday, January 24th at Finnegan’s Pub, in Abbotsford, BC.  The event is part of the Cascades annual participation in the “Shoot for the Cure” an initiative led by the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s basketball coaching association.  The project started in 2007 and has raised closeto $512,000.00 by the 44 member schools* that participate in women’s basketball.

The Cascades, nationally ranked second in the CIS top ten poll, will also host their fifth annual “Shoot for the Cure” basketball game on Saturday, January 26th against the UNBC Timberwolves.

UFV has raised over $5,000.00 at the Envision Athletic Centre.   Led by fourth year veteran guard Alexa McCarthy, Chilliwack, BC the Cascades have sold UFV “Shoot for the Cure” t-shirts, CBCF pins, water bottles and ribbons.  “We are really excited for this year’s event and look forward to raising funds and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to support from the community, our entire team is working hard to make this year’s Shoot for the Cure our most successful yet,” said the Kinesiology major.

The Cascades will run the inaugural “Shoot for the Cure” fundraiser from 7pm to 9pm at the restaurant located at 33780 King Road (Abbotsford).  The goal is to raise funds for the CBCF by selling tickets to the event, which include a meal, for $15 each.  In addition, the women’s basketball team will be asking the Fraser Valley business community to donate prizes and gifts for a silent auction that will run during the evening.  All proceeds will go to the CBCF.

“These events are great opportunities to not only get educated on the work being done by the CBCF, but also support a great cause,” commented Rocky Olfert Athletic Director.  “I’m really appreciative of the work that Al, Alexa and the women’s basketball team have put into raising funds towards a great foundation.”

If anyone is interested in donating a gift to the silent auction they can contact Al Tuchscherer, head coach of UFV’s women’s basketball team at 604-557-6266 or by email at al.tuchscherer@ufv.ca
