UFV Cascades defeated University of Regina Cougars, 82-68, sweep two game Prairie road trip

Regina, SK… While the weather in Regina might have been frightful, the Cascades were surely delightful inside the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport, tonight as they won their seventh Canada West regular season men’s basketball game, 82-68, over the Regina Cougars. UFV will go into the holiday break sitting at 7-3, good for second place in Canada West’s Pacific Division.  UFV has now won five straight regular season games going into the break.  

The Cascades came out strong tonight and while the Cougars matched UFV basket for basket in the first quarter, the CIS number sixth ranked Cascades played extremely well considering the travel they endured to get to Regina from Brandon.  UFV led by two points after the first quarter.  In the second quarter, UFV started to extend their lead with key baskets by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario and Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC.  UFV shot a very impressive 46 percent in the half and while coach Adam Friesen shorten his bench, he received quality productivity from all the Cascades that played tonight.  Parchment led UFV with 14 points at the half, Grewal, the fifth year veteran, chipped in with 13 points. 

UFV started to take control of the game in the second half, Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC scored half of his 14 points in the third quarter and James York, Richland, Washington distributed the ball well tonight as he recorded seven assists.  UFV led by double digits, 14 points, after the third quarter. In the final quarter, UFV held Regina to 15 points and maintained their 14 point lead throughout to clinch their seventh victory of the campaign.  “The guys really battled hard tonight to finish off this trip with two key victories,” said Friesen.

Parchment put on a clinic tonight, leading UFV in scoring with 23 points, recording six steals, three assists, pulling down 12 team leading rebounds and blocking two Regina shots.  Kevon has certainly made the adjustment from playing last year in the ACAC, at Alberta’s Lakeland College to the top level of amateur basketball in Canada, the CIS.  Averaging 19.3 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game, the Kinesiology major is second in scoring on the Cascades to Freeman at 19.4 ppg. 

Grewal also had a great game scoring 18 points, pulling in 11 rebounds, recording six assists and one blocked shot.  Freeman added 14 points and in addition to York’s seven assists, he scored 11 points and six rebounds. UFV shot 38 percent in the second half and 42 percent for the game. 

“Our defense, willingness to make the extra pass and support of one another allowed us to get the win tonight,” said Friesen. 

The Cascades are now off for the holiday/exam break until the weekend of January 11-12 when two Canada West Prairie power houses Saskatchewan and Alberta come to the Envision Athletic Centre, in Abbotsford.
