Brandon, Manitoba…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Brandon University Bobcats, 74-35, tonight in Brandon, Manitoba to remain undefeated and improve their Pacific Division leading record to a perfect 9-0, in Canada West. The Cascades, ranked 2nd in the CIS top ten poll, face the Regina Cougars (8-1) tomorrow night in Regina, the last game of the fall semester.
The Cascades demonstrated why they are one of Canada’s top teams as they held the winless Bobcat team (0-9) to 16 first half points and allowing Brandon only five second quarter points. The Cascades shot 45 percent in the first half as they posted 43 points jumping out to a quick double digit lead and never looking back. Coach Al Tuchscherer was able to play all twelve Cascades tonight as ten UFV players scored in the victory. Second year guard, Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC had a tremendous game, the General Studies major led UFV in scoring at the half with 17 points. Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC added 7 points at the break.
In the second half, UFV held Brandon to four points in the third quarter, the lowest amount of points allowed, by a Cascades team, in three years in Canada West play. UFV extended their lead to 35 points after the quarter and would go onto defeat Brandon by 39 tonight. “Nice team effort tonight,” said Tuchscherer. “I thought we played a solid 40 minutes with the bench coming in and maintaining our defensive energy.”
Sartori led UFV with a career high 27 point performance. Kayli also recorded three rebounds, assists and steals to have a monster of a game. Sarah Wierks chipped in with 11 points and recorded six steals tonight as UFV forced 28 Brandon turnovers in the game. The Cascades shot 39 percent in the second half from the floor.
The Cascades face a Regina team that they played twice in the preseason splitting with the Cougars, falling 75-58 and defeating them, 77-72, both games, like tomorrow night where played in Regina. The game will be broadcast live on www.canadawest.tv
