Brandon, Manitoba…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Brandon University Bobcats, 81-61, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 6-3, in the Pacific Division. The Cascades have one game remaining tomorrow night against the University of Regina Cougars, before the holiday break. The Cascades, ranked 6th in the CIS top ten poll, are currently in second place one game behind UBC, at 7-2.
UFV came out strong tonight and shot 53 percent in the first half while holding the Bobcats to eight first quarter points and 20 for the half. The Cascades played their strongest game tonight from the opening whistle to the final blow of the referee’s whistle. The “team defense” was brilliant as they force 11 Brandon turnovers while scoring 45 first half points. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC led UFV in scoring at the break with 14 points and fifth year veteran Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC added 12 points. “Guys came out and had our best first quarter of the year which was nice to see,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen of his team’s 23-8 first quarter lead.
The Cascades continued to play strong defense in the second half as they held Brandon to 11 points in the third quarter and built up a season high 36 point lead going in the final quarter. In the fourth quarter Coach Friesen played his bench giving the starters some rest for Saturday’s game as UFV would coast to a 20-point victory. The Cascades shot 37 percent in the second half, as Grewal led UFV in scoring with 24 points. Freeman and Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario each added 15 points in the victory. Parchment pulled down a team high 14 rebounds as UFV outrebounded Brandon 53 to 42 for the game.
The Cascades moved the ball around well tonight evident by recording 13 assists, James York, Richland, Washington led the way with three assists.
“I hope we can replicate today’s hustle, work ethic and unselfishness in tomorrow night’s final game of the semester,” commented Friesen.
